A face-cream ingredient sold to smooth lines around the eyes and forehead. It has not been properly tested on its own; one 24-person study used a mixed product.

Sold for

SNAP-8 is sold as a longer, stronger version of Argireline that relaxes expression lines around the eyes and forehead when applied topically.

Studies say

The mechanism is borrowed from Argireline and the clinical support is one 24-person study of a microneedle patch that mixed SNAP-8 with other actives, which is too little to say SNAP-8 itself reduces wrinkles (grade C).

Why grade C. The only peer-reviewed human study found that tests a product containing SNAP-8 is a 2024 split-face study in 24 people, in which a microneedle patch carrying SNAP-8 together with other actives was compared with a plain hyaluronic acid patch for 28 days. SNAP-8 has not been tested on its own against placebo, and the claim that it beats Argireline comes from the manufacturer. That is grade C. 4

FDA. Acetyl octapeptide-3 (SNAP-8) is a cosmetic ingredient. The FDA does not approve cosmetic ingredients before sale and regulates products containing it as cosmetics provided they claim only to improve appearance; it is not an approved drug for any use. 23

What it is

Acetyl octapeptide-3, trade name SNAP-8, is a lab-made peptide with eight amino acids. Lipotec made it as a follow-on to Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-8). Like Argireline, it copies a stretch of SNAP-25. Nerve endings need that protein to release neurotransmitters. The two extra amino acids are meant to make it a better copy. 1

It is sold as an ingredient for serums and eye creams, usually at a few percent of the formula. Because it is a cosmetic, it reaches the market with no FDA review of whether it works. 23

How it works

Facial muscles contract when nerves release acetylcholine. That release runs through a protein assembly called the SNARE complex, and SNAP-25 is one part of it. Peptides patterned on SNAP-25 are designed to slip into that complex and weaken it. In theory, this cuts neurotransmitter release and softens the contractions that fold skin into expression lines. The proposed mechanism is the same as Argireline's, and so is the objection. A charged peptide put on the skin surface has to reach nerve endings beneath the dermis. Nobody has shown that happens in people. 1

What human research shows

The one controlled clinical study of a product containing SNAP-8 appeared in Annals of Dermatology in 2024. The patch maker published it. Twenty-four healthy adults wore a dissolving microneedle patch under one eye overnight. It carried SNAP-8, a vitamin C derivative and a lipid signalling molecule. Under the other eye they wore a plain hyaluronic acid patch. Over 28 days the side with the active patch improved more in eye wrinkles and skin elasticity. There were no adverse effects. The microneedles push the ingredients through the outer skin layer. So the result says nothing about SNAP-8 in an ordinary cream. The mixture also means no one can credit the effect to SNAP-8 alone. 4

No independent trial has tested SNAP-8 alone against placebo. No head-to-head comparison with Argireline has been published. No study has followed users for longer than a few weeks. 4

Safety

The published patch study reported no adverse effects. Cosmetic peptides of this type are generally well tolerated on the skin. Argireline has a published Cosmetic Ingredient Review safety assessment, but SNAP-8 does not. There are also no data on what happens if a meaningful amount does cross the skin. 4

Questions for your clinician

  • Is there a controlled trial of SNAP-8 on its own, not mixed with other ingredients?
  • Does a topical peptide this size reach the muscles it is meant to relax?
  • Are the wrinkle results I have seen from independent studies or from the manufacturer?

Questions people ask

Is SNAP-8 FDA-approved?

No. It is a cosmetic ingredient, and the FDA does not approve cosmetic ingredients. A product that claimed to change muscle function would be regulated as a drug. That claim would no longer be about appearance, so the product would need approval. No SNAP-8 product has it. 23

Is SNAP-8 better than Argireline?

That claim comes from the manufacturer. No independent head-to-head trial has been published. Argireline itself has a randomized placebo-controlled trial in 60 Chinese adults. It found a positive result on wrinkles around the eyes. 1

Does SNAP-8 work like Botox?

Only in concept. Botulinum toxin is injected and cuts SNAP-25 with an enzyme, which paralyses muscle for months. SNAP-8 goes on the skin and is meant to interfere with the same protein complex. It is far weaker, and there is no evidence it reaches the nerve endings in people. 1
